Community members and officials on April 13 celebrated major milestones in the redevelopment of the Flat 9 at Whittier complex. Members of local, state and federal government, joined by members of the development team and community residents, marked the completion of the second phase of the redevelopment as well as the groundbreaking of its third and final phase.

The state gets credit for one recent, bold effort to address the crisis — a new law designed to push single-family-obsessed suburbs into allowing more multi-family development.
But much more needs to be done.

Washington, D.C. – The Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition (AHTCC) today announced that Flat 9 at Whittier in Roxbury, Mass., is a 2020 recipient of the Charles L. Edson Tax Credit Excellence Award in the HUD Housing Preservation category, recognizing affordable housing developments and organizations that have demonstrated especially impactful use of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (Housing Credit).

The redevelopment of the former Whittier Street Apartments public housing in Roxbury is one of 28 affordable housing developments that will receive a state grant for construction according to a public announcement today by Governor Charlie Baker and Housing and Economic Development Secretary Mike Kennealy.
- Whittier Street housing redevelopment underway
Since 1953, the red brick buildings of the Whittier Street public housing development towered over the corner of Tremont and Ruggles Street.
Over the decades, much changed around them: In the 1960s, homes and stores were leveled for the aborted extension of Interstate 95 through Roxbury. In the 1980s, the Orange Line was relocated to the Southwest Corridor with a new station at Ruggles Street. In the 1990s, the new Boston Police Department headquarters was built across the street. Whittier Phase 2 Redevelopment Included
Governor Charlie Baker announced the 2019 Affordable Rental Housing Awards. Today’s awards will support the preservation and production of 1,581 rental units, including 1,349 affordable units. This includes 273 units that will be reserved for extremely low-income households. Continued here
